MoDOT urges drivers to watch for roadside mowing crews

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Missouri Department of Transportation is asking drivers to use caution around mowing crews working along interstates and other busy roadways.

A rainy spring and warm temperatures have increased seasonal vegetation growth along Missouri roads. MoDOT mows state routes three times annually — during the spring, summer and fall — with timing based on rainfall and growth.

“Our mowing efforts focus on visibility and safety,” MoDOT State Maintenance Director Darin Hamelink said. “Pay attention, slow down, buckle up and put your cellphone down.”

Mowers typically travel between 2 and 5 mph. Crews use protective follow trucks with flashing lights to warn drivers approaching the slow-moving equipment.

When encountering mowing crews, drivers should:

• Slow down and avoid distractions.
• Prepare to stop or travel slowly behind follow trucks.
• Use extra caution near hills and curves.
• Obey no-passing zones.
• Pass only when the roadway ahead is clearly visible and free of oncoming traffic.

MoDOT maintains about 400,000 acres of grass along state roads, an area equivalent to approximately 300,000 football fields.
