Sikeston rodeo launches inclusive event honoring longtime rodeo clown

SIKESTON, Mo., (KBSI) — The Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo will host its first Ragin’ Cajun Roundup on Aug. 3, giving people with disabilities an opportunity to experience rodeo activities in a supportive environment.

The free event will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Art Saunders Arena at the Sikeston Rodeo Grounds, 1220 N. Ingram Road.

The roundup is named in memory of Rick “The Ragin’ Cajun” Young, a rodeo clown who entertained Sikeston crowds for more than 60 years. Young died March 20 at age 92.

Kelly Marks, office manager for the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo, said she was inspired by a similar event at an Alabama rodeo. Young died the following morning.

“Naming it after Rick, the Ragin’ Cajun Roundup, was the best way to remember him for years to come,” Marks said.

The rodeo is partnering with the Kenny Rogers Children’s Center and Community Sheltered Workshop for the inaugural event. Young visited the children’s center several times during his career.

Participants will rotate through activities including steer roping, stick-pony barrel racing, an inflatable bull station, rodeo queen autographs and photo opportunities with gentle animals. Additional stations will introduce participants to animal feed and horse tack.

Therapists from the Kenny Rogers Children’s Center will be available to assist participants.

Organizers expect about 100 participants, relatives and caregivers. Families may register through the Kenny Rogers Children’s Center or Community Sheltered Workshop, with no registration deadline or Sikeston residency requirement.

Organizers plan to use this year’s event to determine what resources would be needed to open it to the broader public in 2027.

The event will be held two days before the 74th annual Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo, scheduled for Aug. 5-8.
