Light fixture malfunction sparks fire at Perryville business

PERRYVILLE, Mo., (KBSI) — A malfunctioning light fixture sparked a fire early Thursday at a commercial building in Perryville, according to the city’s fire department.

Firefighters responded to the 200 block of Hospital Lane around 1:22 a.m. after receiving a report of a fire alarm. The call was upgraded to a commercial structure fire after smoke was seen coming from the building.

Crews encountered heavy smoke and traced the fire to a stairwell on the building’s lower level. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and prevented them from spreading.

The building sustained smoke and water damage on both floors. No injuries were reported.

The Chester Fire Department assisted at the scene, while Perry Mercy EMS established a rehabilitation area for firefighters. Other mutual aid departments were called but canceled after crews brought the fire under control.

Nineteen firefighters and six firetrucks responded. Crews cleared the scene around 3:30 a.m.
