Rebuild Mayfield project selects roundabouts, shared-use path

MAYFIELD, Ky., (KBSI) — Plans for the Rebuild Mayfield project call for roundabouts and a shared-use path as part of a 2.5-mile overhaul of downtown roads.

The project is intended to address infrastructure problems that existed before the 2021 tornado while making downtown safer and more accessible for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Plans include rebuilding key roads and dedicating more public space to walking and cycling. Project officials said the changes are expected to reduce vehicle speeds and create a safer environment for all travelers.

The project team considered two designs for Seventh and Eighth streets and nearby intersections. Alternative 1 included roundabout and a shared-use path, while Alternative 2 proposed traffic signals and bicycle lanes.

After reviewing feedback from an April 2025 public meeting, officials selected Alternative 1 as the preferred design, citing safety benefits and improved traffic flow.

Preliminary design work is underway.
