12-year-old seriously injured in electric scooter crash in McCracken County

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. (KBSI) — A 12-year-old was seriously injured Sunday after an electric scooter collided head-on with an SUV in McCracken County.

According to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 11:49 a.m. to the area of South Gum Springs Road and Jewell Lane for a reported injury crash.

Investigators said the 12-year-old was riding an electric scooter on South Gum Springs Road when the scooter and an SUV driven by a 17-year-old met in a curve and collided head-on.

The scooter rider suffered incapacitating injuries and was flown to an out-of-state hospital for treatment. The teenage driver of the SUV was not injured.

Mercy Regional Ambulance and the Lone Oak Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Following the crash, the sheriff’s office urged parents to talk with their children about the dangers of riding electric scooters and e-bikes on public roadways, noting that the growing popularity of the devices has led to an increase in serious and fatal crashes involving young riders.
