Firefighters respond to more than 60 calls after storms hit Cape Girardeau County

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Firefighters responded to more than 60 calls for service after severe thunderstorms moved through Cape Girardeau County Wednesday night.

Southeast Missouri Professional Firefighters Local 1084 said the storms moved through the area around 8 p.m., bringing damaging winds and lightning.

The storms knocked down trees and power lines, blocked roadways and caused damage to several homes, according to the firefighters union.

Firefighters remained on calls for several hours and continued responding to emergencies into early Thursday morning.

Local 1084 also credited 911 dispatchers, public works employees, utility crews and the Cape Girardeau County Highway Department for helping coordinate emergency responses, clear roads, remove hazards and restore utility services.

Some crews continued storm cleanup and restoration work Thursday.
