West Frankfort school superintendent says email account hacked, 1,700 phishing emails sent

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill., (KBSI) — The superintendent of Frankfort Community Unit School District 168 says his email account was hacked Wednesday morning, resulting in approximately 1,700 phishing emails being sent.

Superintendent Matt Donkin said the incident occurred between 9 and 10 a.m. and involved phishing messages sent through Google Docs.

Donkin apologized for the disruption and said the district was hopeful his account was back up and running.

He also advised recipients that he typically sends documents as email attachments rather than sharing them through Google Docs.

Anyone who received an unexpected document-sharing email from Donkin during that time should avoid clicking links or interacting with the message.
