Mississippi County Jail closes through end of 2026, inmates relocated

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – According to the Mississippi County Commissioner, the Mississippi County Jail will stay closed throughout the end of the year to work on some much-needed improvements. 

“Three of our correction officers had quit, there’s normally six. So, when three quit and then we had the sheriff resign we took that opportunity to inspect the facility” says James Conn, Mississippi County Presiding Commissioner.

 Commissioner Conn shares that all inmates have moved to New Madrid and Scott County jails as they begin repairs.

“Once we inspected it, we saw the need for complete renovation of deep cleaning, painting, door repair, plumbing, electrical. Just a full revamping of it” says Conn.

Any new inmates will be held in the Scott County jail through January 1, 2026, and cleanup and other repairs started this week.

“We’ve allocated the rest of this year for much of the work so that when we do turn it over to the new sheriff on January the 1st, it’s in top working condition” says Conn.
