Escaped Scott County inmate captured near Cape Girardeau hospital

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — An inmate who escaped custody while receiving treatment at a Cape Girardeau hospital was captured Monday afternoon after a resident spotted him hiding in a tree line, according to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities identified the inmate as Kenneth Goeddert of Sikeston. Goeddert was being held at the Scott County Jail on felony charges of resisting arrest and second-degree domestic assault.
Jail staff transported Goeddert to the hospital for a medical complaint. During the visit, authorities said he escaped from corrections officers and fled on foot.
A deputy reviewed hospital security footage that showed Goeddert running from the facility. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Cape Girardeau Police Department, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Police and deputies deployed K-9 units and drones to search a wooded area near the hospital. Authorities said Goeddert removed an IV from his arm and discarded a shirt near the hospital. K-9 units used the shirt to track him and helped officers establish a search area.
A Cape Girardeau resident later reported seeing someone believed to be Goeddert attempting to conceal himself in trees near the resident’s backyard. Law enforcement officers responded, identified Goeddert and took him into custody without incident.
Goeddert was returned to the Scott County Jail, where he remained in custody on his previous charges. Additional charges were under review, the sheriff’s office said.
