CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A section of the Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail is expected to reopen by the end of September if work continues as planned, according to the city of Cape Girardeau.
The section extending from Bloomfield Road through the Shawnee Park Sports Complex has been closed for renovations since April.
Crews have replaced pipes and concrete and widened the trail from 8 feet to 12 feet. During construction, crews discovered a broken stormwater pipe that must be replaced before the trail can safely reopen.
Other work will continue over the next few weeks. The city said keeping traffic away from newly seeded areas will allow vegetation to grow and help prevent mud from washing onto the trail during heavy rain.
Once completed, the trail will feature a wider path and a new surface.
