Hayti police warn against threatening ‘Cat in the Hat’ social media posts

HAYTI, Mo., (KBSI) — The Hayti Police Department is warning residents that arrests could be made if people use the viral “Cat in the Hat” social media trend to threaten others.
The trend involves digitally altered or artificial intelligence-generated images and videos depicting a sinister version of the Dr. Seuss character. Some posts show the character appearing to lurk near homes, schools or other locations.
While many of the posts appear to be intended as fictional horror content or pranks, some identify real people, schools and communities or include threatening language.
Hayti police said anyone who uses the trend to threaten a resident, local business or the Hayti School District could face criminal charges.
Anyone with information about a threatening post is asked to call the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office at 573-333-4101. Anonymous tips may also be submitted at haytipolice.org.
