State, federal investigators examine cause of Du Quoin fire

DU QUOIN, Ill., (KBSI) — State and federal investigators were at the scene Thursday working to determine the cause of a major fire that destroyed three downtown Du Quoin businesses.
Investigators with the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were seen photographing the scene and speaking with affected business owners and witnesses.
Firefighters responded shortly before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday after thick, black smoke was spotted coming from Home Lumber Co. at 17 S. Chestnut St.
Within about 30 minutes, the fire spread north and reached three buildings along West Main Street.
Home Lumber Co., Croessmann Wholesale and BJ’s Garden Inn Cafe were considered total losses as of Thursday afternoon.
Several nearby buildings sustained minor damage, including a former auto parts store, Du Quoin Auto Service and Tomahawk Bar and Grill.
No fatalities were reported.
The Du Quoin Fire Department said it will release additional information as it becomes available.
