Three injured in Sikeston shooting; police recover 32 shell casings

SIKESTON, Mo., (KBSI) — Three people were injured in an early-morning shooting Sunday near the intersection of Luther and Osage streets, according to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

Officers were monitoring a large holiday weekend gathering of an estimated 800 to 1,000 people in the area. By shortly after 3 a.m., most of the crowd had dispersed, leaving about 100 to 200 people near the intersection. Officers also noticed another large group gathering several blocks south near Branum and Lora streets.

At approximately 3:40 a.m., officers received a ShotSpotter alert indicating possible fully automatic gunfire near Luther and Osage. Officers in the area also reported hearing the shots.

When officers arrived, they learned three people had been shot. Police said people ran in multiple directions because of the gunfire and the size of the crowd.

Investigators recovered 32 spent shell casings in three different calibers. One firearm was also found near the scene.

One victim remains in serious condition at a trauma hospital. The other two suffered gunshot wounds to their lower extremities and have been released from the hospital.

Police said officers attempted to speak with witnesses at the scene, but no one has come forward with information. Investigators are asking for the public’s help identifying anyone who possessed a firearm or deliberately shot one of the victims.

The victims’ names are not being released.
