SEMO Step Up for Down Syndrome walk and festival set for Oct. 10

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Southeast Missouri Chapter of the Gateway Down Syndrome Association will host its annual SEMO Step Up for Down Syndrome Awareness Walk and Festival on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau.
The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Shelter No. 2. It will feature food, games, music, vendors and prizes as the organization celebrates its 50th anniversary.
A short awareness walk around the park will begin at 11 a.m.
Attendees may create teams in honor of loved ones with Down syndrome and raise money to earn prizes. Fundraising is optional, and the event is open to the public.
Proceeds will remain in southeast Missouri and support educational resources, family assistance and community outreach for people with Down syndrome and their families.
The association says about 1 in 691 babies is born with Down syndrome, making it the most common genetic anomaly.
