Police seek suspects after at least five cats killed in Zeigler

ZEIGLER, Ill., (KBSI) — Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a van and its occupants after at least five cats were reportedly shot and killed in Zeigler.
According to the Zeigler Police Department, a witness saw two people inside a white van firing what appeared to be a high-powered pellet rifle at cats around 1 a.m. Sept. 13. The van was seen in the 300 block of Orchard Street.
A home surveillance camera reportedly captured the same vehicle in the 500 block of Church Street around the same time. Officers later found three dead cats with pellet rifle wounds near Beaumont and Niles streets.
Police believe the vehicle traveled along Coxspur, Church, Orchard and possibly South Pine streets. Investigators estimate at least five cats were killed, although additional animals may have been injured or killed.
The vehicle is described as a white Chevrolet Express or GMC Savana full-size passenger van manufactured between 1996 and 2003. Police believe the people involved may live in the Zeigler area.
The department said firing a weapon from a vehicle in a residential neighborhood is dangerous and illegal. Police said the acts could result in felony and misdemeanor charges for each animal.
