Illinois energy assistance applications open Oct. 1 for priority households

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — Illinois households needing help paying energy bills can begin applying for the next round of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program on Oct. 1, with priority given to certain households.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity said $240 million will be available to help eligible households pay natural gas, propane and electricity costs. Funding may also be available for furnace assistance.

Beginning Oct. 1, applications will be accepted from households that include a person 60 or older, a person with a disability or a child 5 or younger. Households with disconnected utilities, a disconnection notice or less than 25% of propane remaining can also apply beginning Oct. 1.

All other income-eligible households can apply beginning Nov. 1.

LIHEAP provides payments directly to energy providers on behalf of qualifying households. Assistance amounts vary based on household circumstances.

Applications will remain open through Aug. 13, 2027, or until funding is exhausted.

Eligibility is based on household income and size. Residents can contact their local administering agency for eligibility requirements and application information.
