Jackson Fire Rescue highlights work that continues after a fire

JACKSON, Mo., (KBSI) — Jackson Fire Rescue is giving the public a look at the work firefighters do after the flames are extinguished and crews leave the scene.

Following a recent residential structure fire that lasted about three hours, firefighters spent at least another hour cleaning equipment and preparing it for the next emergency.

According to the department, crews from Engine 13 and Engine 23, along with Deputy Chief 3330, washed fire hoses, cleaned the firetruck and inspected and reorganized equipment ahead of the department’s 7 a.m. shift change.

Firefighters also cleaned themselves and changed out of clothing and protective equipment worn during the fire. The department said contaminated personal protective equipment, or PPE, is cleaned to reduce firefighters’ exposure to contaminants and carcinogens produced during structure fires.

The process continues for several days after a fire. PPE used at the scene is put through specialized cleaning equipment and thoroughly dried before being returned to service. Hoses and air packs are also cleaned, dried and returned to their assigned locations.

The department said the process helps ensure firefighters and their equipment are ready for the next emergency.

“The fire may be out, but the work isn’t over,” Jackson Fire Rescue said.
