CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A Cape Girardeau man faces five misdemeanor charges after a vehicle he was driving struck a juvenile riding a scooter Sunday, Oct. 4, according to police.

Officers responded about 11:48 a.m. to the 1000 block of Bloomfield Road.

A preliminary investigation found that Deandre Baylis, 22, was driving a 2018 Nissan Altima east on Bloomfield Road when the vehicle struck a juvenile traveling south on Hanover Street on a scooter, police said.

Medical personnel treated the juvenile before taking the child to an area hospital for further treatment. Police did not release the juvenile’s condition.

Investigators identified Baylis’ cellphone use while driving and the juvenile’s failure to stop at a posted stop sign as probable contributing factors in the crash.

Police said the vehicle was improperly registered and did not have current insurance. Baylis resisted officers as they attempted to detain him, according to the department.

The Cape Girardeau County Prosecutor’s Office charged Baylis with resisting arrest, careless and imprudent driving, operating a motor vehicle while using an electronic communication device, failure to register a motor vehicle and failure to maintain financial responsibility.

Baylis is being held on a $5,000 cash-only bond, police said.

The charges are accusations, and Baylis is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
