Paducah seeks Veterans Day parade entries, award nominations and student submissions

PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — Paducah is accepting parade entries, award nominations and student poster and essay contest submissions ahead of its Veterans Day observances Nov. 11.
The deadline for all submissions is Oct. 22. Entry forms and details are available on the city’s Veterans Day webpage.
The Distinguished Veteran Award recognizes a veteran who is active in the community. Veterans from any military branch may be nominated, with preference given to current McCracken County residents.
The Patriot Award honors a nonveteran who volunteers to serve veterans and support veterans’ causes.
Paducah Parks and Recreation and the Paducah chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are sponsoring the poster and essay contest for K-12 students in Paducah and McCracken County.
The contest has five divisions:
– Grades K-1: An original 8½-by-11-inch poster on “Veterans Helping Others.”
– Grades 2-3: An original 8½-by-11-inch poster on “Veterans Helping Others.”
– Grades 4-5: A 100- to 150-word essay on “What did our Revolutionary War Veterans Sacrifice?”
– Grades 6-8: A 150- to 200-word essay on “Veterans Who Helped Shape America.”
– Grades 9-12: A 200- to 400-word essay on “The Meaning and Cost of Service to our Nation.”
First-, second- and third-place winners will be selected in each division. Submissions must be the student’s original work and include the student’s name, grade, school and teacher, along with phone numbers and email addresses for the school or home school and a parent or guardian.
Veterans Day activities begin with Sunrise Reveille at approximately 6:15 a.m. Nov. 11 at Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza. The ceremony includes the playing of reveille and raising of the American flag at sunrise, followed by refreshments.
An opening ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at the plaza and will recognize award recipients and contest winners.
The parade begins at 11 a.m. at Sixth and Washington streets. It will travel along Sixth Street, turn right onto Broadway toward the riverfront, then turn left onto Water Street and conclude at Water and Jefferson streets.
