Community support urgently needed to stock essentials needed for local foster children

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — A local resale shop is asking the community for help replenishing its shelves as the need for clothing, hygiene products and other essentials for foster children continues.

Sammy’s Window, located at 118 N. Main St. in downtown Cape Girardeau, is part of Foster.Adopt.Connect, an organization that provides resources and support to foster families and children.

Alyssa Alger, Branch Manager of Foster.Adopt.Connect, said the shop is running low on several essential items, including winter boots, warm clothing, coats, gloves, hats and hygiene products.

The organization also needs socks, underwear, pajamas and clothing for children particularly boys ages 2 to 5 and girls of various ages and teen clothing.

“We’re seeing a real need for those types of things,” Alger said, adding that donated items often go quickly because families need them.

Sammy’s Window operates differently from a traditional resale shop. Foster.Adopt.Connect provides items to its clients free of charge, helping ensure children in foster care have access to necessities without placing additional financial burdens on their families.

The Cape Girardeau location is also open to the public for resale shopping. Money raised through store sales goes back toward supporting the organization’s clients.

Beyond everyday necessities, Alger said the organization also needs birthday supplies for teenage boys and items for teenagers in foster care. Donations of matching shampoo and conditioner sets are also welcome.

From diapers and clothing to food and last-minute birthday needs, the organization works to provide resources to foster children and families at no cost.

Even well-worn clothing can be repaired through an organization they partner with.

Community members can drop off donations at Sammy’s Window, located at 118 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau.

Alger said every contribution can make a difference for a local child in need.
