Snake Road closure extended through Nov. 5 due to warm weather, snake migration
FOX23 News at 9 p.m.
JONESBORO, Ill. (KBSI) – Snake Road in the Shawnee National Forest will remain closed to motor vehicles through Nov. 5 because of unseasonably warm weather and ongoing snake migration activity.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, snakes migrate each fall from their summer habitat in LaRue Swamp to their winter habitat in the nearby limestone bluffs.
The migration requires snakes to cross Snake Road, prompting seasonal closures to protect wildlife.
Although motor vehicles are prohibited during the closure, visitors are still allowed to travel the road on foot.
The Forest Service reminds visitors to follow posted regulations while exploring the area.
Additional information about wildlife safety and regulations is available on the Shawnee National Forest website.
