TENNESSEE (KBSI) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says automated license plate reader technology played a critical role in helping law enforcement locate and apprehend escaped inmate Jacob Morley.

In a social media post, the agency said the technology helped investigators track down Morley and take him into custody.

Automated license plate readers, also known as ALPRs, capture vehicle license plate information that law enforcement can use during investigations.

The TBI also highlighted a 2024 case involving Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Adam Cothran, who was shot during a traffic stop.

According to the agency, license plate reader technology helped investigators identify and locate those responsible for the shooting.

The TBI said the cases demonstrate how technology can assist law enforcement in following investigative leads, locating suspects and protecting communities.

The agency emphasized its commitment to using available investigative tools to support public safety efforts.
