1 arrested after police chase in stolen vehicle

HERRIN, Ill. (KBSI) – A Mt. Vernon man faces charges after a police chase in Williamson County.

Jake A. Gilmore of Mt. Vernon faces charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving and driving while license revoked.

Williamson County Sheriff’s deputies were told that Herrin police pfficers were chasing a stolen vehicle on February 10 around 12:40 a.m.

Herrin police initially tried to stop the vehicle for multiple traffic violations. However, at the same time the driver failed to yield for police it was reported stolen.

The driver led law enforcement westbound on Herrin Road, south on Cambria Road, and westbound on Illinois Route 13.

As the vehicle approached Spillway Road, Williamson County Sheriff’s deputies and Herrin police officer tried to conduct a rolling road block which slowed the suspect to a near stop.

The suspect then drove off the road, traveled through the median, and traveled a short distance until turning southbound onto Spillway Road, according to sheriff’s deputies.

As the vehicle entered Spillway Road, ite was traveling at low speed. Deputies conducted a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver. The vehicle lost traction and spun 180 degrees coming to rest in the roadw where it was blocked in by multiple patrol units.

Gilmore and two passengers were removed from the vehicle.

Additional charges are anticipated.

Gilmore was taken to the Williamson County Jail.

“The public should know that Herrin Police located a stolen vehicle so quickly that the victim was still in the process of reporting the theft,” said Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich. “Law enforcement in Williamson County remains united in protecting our citizens and their property. This incident is a perfect example of that collaboration.
