1 arrested after remains of missing woman found in barn in Cape Girardeau County

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – A woman faces a charge after the remains of a missing woman were found in a barn in Cape Girardeau County.

Teresa L. Baumgartner faces a charge of tampering with physical evidence in a felony investigation.

Jessi Wilfong was reported missing by her mother on May 25. An intensive investigation and led to a search warrant on June 15 at a home in Cape Girardeau County. From the evidence collected and other information obtained from the investigative process, it was suspected that foul play was involved in the disappearance of Wilfong.

On June 18, information led deputies to a location in close proximity to the previously searched home. Subsequent investigation revealed the site of a recently dug portion of ground inside of a barn structure. Excavation of the area revealed the remains of Jessi Wilfong.

On June 20, an autopsy was performed on Wilfong’s body. The autopsy findings indicated Wilfong’s cause of death was a homicide.

The investigation is ongoing. Additional charges are anticipated against one or more people.
