1 arrested after sheriff’s deputies find drug during traffic stop in Johnston City

JOHNSTON CITY, Ill. (KBSI) – A traffic stop led to a drug arrest in Johnston City.
Chad W. Karnes faces charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Williamson County Sheriff’s Office deputies on patrol in the Johnston City area say they saw a vehicle commit multiple violations. They pulled the driver over at 7:09 p.m. on June 27.
While speaking to the driver and completing a written warning, a Williamson County Sheriff’s Office K9 arrived on scene to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle.
Deputies say that K9 “Shadow” provided a positive alert to the odor of narcotics.
They did a probable cause search of the vehicle.
Deputies say they found a clear plastic bag containing methamphetamine in a duffel bag containing men’s clothing.
They say the items belonged to Karnes who was a passenger in the vehicle. The items also included a birthday card with his name on it.
Deputies say they also found an Apple iPhone box containing packaging waste, packaging materials and hypodermic syringes with residue which field tested positive for methamphetamine.
Karnes was taken to the Williamson County Jail.
