1 dead, 1 injured in fire in New Madrid County

NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – One person is dead and one was treated for smoke inhalation after a house fire in New Madrid County Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to a fire located in a rural part of the county on State Hwy. AA between Matthews and Sikeston at 8:52 a.m. on January 9.

New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Chris Hensley says and person came home and found the house on fire.

An elderly woman died and one person was taken for medical treatment of smoke inhalation, according to Chief Deputy Hensley.

Authorities believe the cause of the fire to be accidental and possibly started with an electric heater.

The New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, New Madrid County Coroner, Matthews Fire Department, Sikeston Fire Department, Miner Fire Department and Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office were called to investigate.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, January 10.
