1 dead in crash in rural Makanda

MAKANDA, Ill. (KBSI) – One person died in a crash in rural Makanda on Saturday, April 1.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a single vehicle traffic crash on US Highway 51, about a quarter mile north of Rifle Range Road in rural Makanda on Saturday at 10:27 a.m.

The caller reported a white Ford F-250 was off the roadway, struck a tree, and the truck was on fire.

The fire spread from the truck into a wooded area, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

A preliminary investigation shows a white Ford F-250 was northbound on US Highway 51. The truck gradually drove off the road to the right, when down a slight embankment, and struck a tree, according to the sheriff’s office.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown a short distance from the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office. The name of the driver is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of family.

The crash is being investigated by the sheriff’s office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. The Jackson County Ambulance Service, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, and Makanda Township Fire Department assisted on the call.
