1 injured after semi-truck, train crash in Jackson County

DE SOTO, Ill. (KBSI) – One person was injured in a crash between a semi-truck and a train on Highway 51 in De Soto, Illinois on Wednesday.

Jackson County Sheriff Robert D. Burns says a semi-truck driver was traveling westbound on Helm Road crossing the railroad tracks.

It happened about 1:53 p.m. at Burris Road and Helm Road.

When the semi crossed the railroad track, the front of the semi-truck was struck by a southbound Amtrak train.

The person in the truck was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. His name has not been released.

No passengers or the operator of the Amtrak train were injured.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, DeSoto Police Department, Carbondale Township Fire Department, Carbondale Fire Department and Jackson County Ambulance Service responded to the scene.

Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate.
