1 man found dead after Cape Girardeau County house fire

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – A elderly man died in a house fire in Cape Girardeau County early Wednesday morning.

The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a structure fire at 4809 State Highway W at 4 a.m. At the same time a deputy was driving by and saw the fire and confirmed to dispatch a residential single-story home was engulfed in flames.

The deputy tried to determine if anyone was home, but could not gain entrance to the house due to the extent of the flames, smoke and heat.

Around 4:12 a.m., fire departments from Cape Girardeau, East County, Gordonville, Fruitland and Jackson began arriving at the home.

After speaking with relatives about who lived there, it was found that the body of Arno Raymond Southard, 81, of Cape Girardeau, was discovered inside the home.

The fire marshal will be investigating the death, cause and origin of the fire.
