$11 million to go to Crab Orchard Greenway Multimodal Network

WILLIAMSON/JACKSON COUNTIES, Ill. (KBSI) – More than $11 million in federal funding will go to the Crab Orchard Greenway Multimodal Network.

U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $11.145 million the Crab Orchard Greenway Multimodal Network at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.

The grant is funded through the Fiscal Year 2023 National Significant Federal Lands and Tribal Projects Program.

The money will go toward supporting the construction of 12 miles of a multiuse cycling trail near Energy, Illinois.

“I can think of no better way to enjoy the natural beauty of Southern Illinois than by viewing it on a leisurely bike ride. I’m happy to see the federal government make such a significant investment in making our state’s natural landscapes more accessible by providing funding for miles of multiuse cycling trails,” said Durbin.

“I’m proud that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to support and benefit Illinoisans by not only repairing and enhancing our infrastructure, but also by supporting community engagement, equity and access to nature,” Duckworth said. “This federal funding to construct a new multi-use cycling trail will allow Southern Illinois residents and visitors better access to explore Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge for years to come.”
