17-year-old pedestrian struck, dies after hit by vehicle in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – A 17-year-old pedestrian died after he was hit by a vehicle in Carbondale on January 13.

Carbondale police officers responded to the 1300 block of East Main Street on Saturday, January 13 at 4:04 a.m. in reference to a traffic crash involving a pedestrian.

Officers determined a vehicle hit a pedestrian while the pedestrian walked in the road outside of a designated crosswalk.

The Jackson County Ambulance Service responded and took the injured pedestrian to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

The pedestrian, a 17-year-old boy, was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. Police have not released the victim’s identity.

The driver of the vehicle who struck the pedestrian stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The Illinois State Police responded to assist with the traffic crash reconstruction.

Two lanes of East Main Street were closed for several hours while officers investigated.

No one faces any charges at this time.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
