2 arrested after Carbondale shots fired incident leads to chase, crash

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Carbondale Police Department officers are investigating a shots fired incident early Monday morning that led to a vehicle pursuit, crash and two arrests.

Officers responded at 5:47 a.m. to reports of multiple gunshots in the 600 block of North Bridge Street. When officers arrived, the suspect or suspects had already left the area. Police said a residence was damaged by gunfire, but no injuries were reported. Evidence collected at the scene confirmed shots had been fired.

During the investigation, officers located a suspect vehicle in the 400 block of West Cherry Street. While following up, officers observed persons of interest enter the vehicle and leave the area. Officers attempted a traffic stop in the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue, but the driver refused to stop and fled, leading to a pursuit.

The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed at the intersection of East Chestnut and North Wall streets. Police said the crash caused minor property damage to the vehicle and a sign. No injuries were reported. Several suspects then fled the scene on foot.

Officers recovered two reported stolen firearms during the investigation and made two arrests.

Police identified the suspects as Iziekiel D. Garner, 20, of Herrin, and Zion M. Hill, 18, of Carbondale. Garner is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a stolen firearm and resisting a police officer. Hill is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a stolen firearm.

Both suspects were taken to the Jackson County Jail, where they are being held pending a detention hearing.

A civic alert was issued advising the public to avoid the area during the investigation. Police said the case remains active and ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the department.
