2 children hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after car crashes into horse-drawn buggy

MURPHYSBORO, Ill., (KBSI) — A collision between a car and a horse-drawn buggy Thursday morning sent two juveniles to a St. Louis hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred around 8:16 a.m. on Illinois 127 near Caraway Road in rural Murphysboro.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, a gray 2015 Nissan Sentra driven by Jawone Newell struck the buggy from behind, ejecting two juvenile passengers.

Newell was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

The sheriff’s office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash, with assistance from the Jackson County Ambulance Service. The roadway was closed for 2 hours and 45 minutes.
