2 men, 1 juvenile face charges in multiple vehicle burglaries

MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KBSI) – Two men and one teenager face charges after police investigated a report of two suspicious men walking around vehicles in under carports in Mount Vernon.

The Mount Vernon Police Department received a report of two suspicious men in the area of Westbrook Drive on Thursday, March 17 at around 4:31 a.m.

The caller reported the men had been walking around vehicles and under carports in the area. Officers responded to the area and saw two men leaving an unsecured storage shed. The men began to run from the officer. Additional units located the two men attempting to hide in a brushy area around Westbrook and Southbrook, according to police. The officers found property that they were later able to determine had been stolen from an unlocked vehicle.  The owner of that vehicle was not aware it had been burglarized until contacted by officers.

Officers arrested, Robert B. Altom, 18, on preliminary charges of criminal trespass to property, criminal trespass to a motor vehicle, resisting /obstructing arrest and possession of stolen property. Altom was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center. His bond was yet to be set.

A 15 year old also faces charges of criminal trespass to property and resisting/obstructing arrest. The juvenile was released to family.

In response to a new report of a burglary to a motor vehicle on Friday, March 18 at 3;12 a.m., officers found a loaded handgun had been stolen from an unlocked vehicle. Additional officers responded to the area to search for suspects.

While the officers were checking the area, the police department received a report of someone burglarizing a vehicle. The officers arrived within a minute to the location and found, Xander Calip, 22, burglarizing the reporting persons vehicle. Officers found Calip was armed with the loaded, stolen handgun taken during the vehicle burglary, according to Mount Vernon Police Department.

Calip was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center on preliminary charges of possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a stolen firearm in commission of a criminal offense, armed habitual offender, criminal trespass to a vehicle and burglary. Calip’s bond is to be set.
