2 men with multiple outstanding warrants arrested after chase on Hwy. 60 into cornfield

SIKESTON, Mo. (KBSI) – Two men with multiple outstanding warrants were arrested in New Madrid County after a police chase that originated in Sikeston and ended in a New Madrid County cornfield.

On Wednesday July 12, around 6:30 p.m. Sikeston Department of Public Safety officers were notified of a vehicle in town occupied by two men who both had outstanding felony criminal arrest warrants.

Gary Looney was driving and and James Swann was a passenger, according to Sikeston DPS.

Officers found the vehicle on S. Main (US 61) and tried to make a vehicle stop to arrested both men. However, Looney failed to yield to officers and led them on a vehicle chase, according to Sikeston DPS.

The vehicle chase started on S. Main (US 61) near Hennings Drive and then continued onto US Highway 60 westbound into New Madrid County. The chase traveled south on New Madrid County roads where Looney stopped the vehicle on a field road between two corn fields, according to Sikeston DPS.

Looney and Swann ran from the vehicle trying to further evade capture by officers.

Sikeston DPS K9 Odin and his handler responded to the area to track the suspects.

Swann arrested officers before entering the corn field.

K-9 Odin’s handler deployed him from their vehicle and tracked Looney for approximately 300 yards into the corn field. Looneywas arrested without incident.

Gary Looney is being held for several outstanding warrants through Mississippi, Perry and Scott counties. Looney faces additional pending felony charges from the vehicle chase.

Swann is being held for several outstanding warrants through Cape Girardeau and Scott counties.

Swann faces additional pending felony charges from the vehicle chase.

The New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, New Madrid County Ambulance, and Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted Sikeston DPS.

Sikeston DPS appreciates the hard work from the officers, especially K-9 Odin and his handler.
