3 killed in head-on crash in Graves County

GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. (KBSI) – Three people died in a head-on crash in Graves County Thursday night.

Kentucky State Police began receiving calls of a wrong way driver on the Purchase Parkway traveling northbound in the southbound traffic lanes from milepost marker 4 in Fulton County around 8:24 p.m. on March 17.

Officers from Graves County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police tried to intercept the wrong-way vehicle.

At 8:33 p.m., at milepost marker 17, a sergeant saw a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes and saw the wrong-way vehicle collide head-on with a southbound maroon minivan, according to the Graves County Sheriff’s Office.

The wrong-way vehicle was a white 2011 GMC Sierra Pickup truck licensed out of Clarksville, Tenn. The minivan was a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan registered out of Fulton Ky.

The driver of the pickup is identified as Sammy McCarty, 64, of Clarksville. McCarty sustained was pronounced dead at the scene by the Graves County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of minivan is identified as James Johnson, 50, of Fulton, Ky. Johnson also sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger in the minivan was identified as 67-year-old Carla Watson. She was transported to Jackson Purchase Medical where she died.

The southbound lanes of the Purchase Parkway were closed for the investigation of the crash and reopened at 11:05  p.m.

Autopsies are scheduled as well as pending toxicology results to determine if intoxicants played a role in this collision.

The Wingo and Mayfield Fire Departments (EMS) Mayfield -Graves County Rescue Squad, Kentucky State Police, Graves County Office of Emergency Management, Burl’s and Paul’s Towing Services assisted at the scene of the crash.
