$4.5 million grant to be distributed throughout Southern Illinois to launch Healing Illinois

MARION Ill. (KBSI) – The Field Foundation of Illinois partnered with the Illinois Department of Human Services to launch Healing Illinois, to distribute $4.5 million in grants to nonprofit organizations.

Healing Illinois was founded in 2020 with the goal to address racial disparities that impact people living throughout Illinois communities.

The initiative will facilitate racial healing activates, lead equity work, and engage in meaningful dialogue.

Byram Fager, who is CEO of Southern Illinois Community Foundation says, “They came to the Community Foundation asking us to be the local representative for them to help get the money into the hands of our local nonprofits around this initiative on racial healing.”

Within the 4.5 million to be distributed, the initiative will offer grants to each nonprofit of up to $30,000.

The grants will fund 4 main project areas that focus on, racial healing and sustainability, narrative change, education and change, and racial healing readiness.

Fager says, “The Healing Illinois initiative is meant to give us these opportunities to meet in our local communities and talk about why we’re still struggling with some of our racial healing. What can we do? How do we have these one to one, frank, conversations about what is going on in our communities, and try to address some of it?”

The deadline for Southern Illinois nonprofits to apply for the Healing Illinois grant is December 1 2024.
