9/11 first responder reflects on lasting health effects 25 years later

ST. LOUIS, Mo., (KBSI) – As the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks approaches, first responder Paul Eliacin is sharing how his experience at Ground Zero continues to affect him.

Eliacin helped with cleanup efforts following the attacks. More than two decades later, he said he continues to experience post-traumatic stress disorder, respiratory problems and an unpredictable cough.

“I have PTSD, I have respiratory, I have a cough at any minute that comes,” Eliacin said. “I could be talking to you right now and I could be coughing uncontrollably.”

Eliacin said he also receives therapy for his mental health. One memory that continues to affect him involves helping firefighters during the cleanup.

“The firefighter said to get a body bag, so that hurts me today, and it’s still in my mind,” Eliacin said. “I still see this body bag going through my hand and coming out with a body.”

Eliacin is now working on a documentary about his experience and educating younger generations about the Sept. 11 attacks.
