Report of a man impersonating an officer; law enforcement speaks on the dangers

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- Cape Girardeau police are investigating a report about man falsely impersonating law enforcement at Capaha Park.

On Monday, August 7, police say a victim told police a white male around 45 years old, wearing a grey t-shirt with no facial hair, driving a red pickup truck (possibly a four-door), identified himself as an off-duty police officer.

The man did not provide any type of identification to the victims. The man requested one of the victim’s IDs and took a picture of it. He then told the victims that they needed to leave, and he left the area, according to police.

“It’s extremely dangerous because we put so much work into gaining the community’s trust and to have that big responsibility and somebody wants to take the uniform and turn it derogatory,” said Patrolman Bobby Newton with the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

Police say the investigation in ongoing.
