A small business gets recognized in a big way in downtown Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – A long standing community staple and small business held a celebration as they received grant funding today.
The Corner Grocery Store received a grant through the Backing Small Business Grant Program backed by American Express and Main Street America to add improvements to the store.
The grant will go to new signage both inside and outside of the store, painting, new inventory, increased lighting and more.
The Corner Grocery Store is positioned right on the corner of 429 Broadway Street in Downtown Cape Girardeau.
It is a quaint “mom and pop” style grocery store full of charm.
From homemade fried chicken, and homemade chicken and dumplings to hand made chocolates you can’t find anywhere else, they also offer grocery items, deli sandwiches and more.
The store is owned and ran by Mr. and Mrs. Gentry who say this grant funding means more than just additions to their store.
“We are a part of something much bigger which is a network of small businesses that makes Cape Girardeau a destination that many people enjoy and appreciate”. said Mr. and Mrs. Gentry.
The celebration and ribbon cutting were held this morning Monday October 14th, 2024, and ran from 10am-12pm.
The ribbon cutting was held by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce.
Lots of community members were in attendance.
The Backing Small Business Grant Program has provided millions in grants to 1,180 small business owners nationwide. American Express and Main Street America initially created the grant program to help economically vulnerable small business owners recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and grow their businesses.
