A suicide attempt turned into a rescue mission after a body was found floating in the river
MARIES COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – According to the Maries County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday September 26th, 2024, the Maries County 911 Communications Center received a 911 call about a possible suicidal person. Phone pings placed the person near the Gasconade River access called the “Get Away” located across from Moreland’s resort.
The Maries County Sheriff’s Office and the Maries County Emergency management responded to the scene.
They located a vehicle, personal belongings, and signs someone had entered the river on foot. At this point additional personnel were dispatched to the scene.
Vichy Volunteer Fire Department, Vienna Fire Department, Maries-Osage Ambulance, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Missouri Conservation Department all were requested to assist with manpower and resources.
All available manpower was deployed along the riverbanks, a drone from the Sheriff’s Office was deployed, and a boat from the Conservation Department was deployed on the river.
A local subject already on the river in a personally owned boat also assisted in looking for this subject.
A short time later, the boat Conservation Agent Tex Rabenau provided, which also contained Deputy Jay Yelton and Jailer Jeff Jones, located a subject a few miles downriver, face down in the water, and floating near the shoreline.
Agent Rabenau is a trained paramedic and both Deputy Yelton and Jailer Jones are trained EMT’s. They immediately got to the individual and determined that the individual was not breathing, and they could not locate a pulse. The subject was pulled onto the shoreline where CPR was immediately administered by Deputy Yelton with the assistance of Jailer Jones and Agent Rabenau.
The CPR successfully revived the subject who, after vomiting a significant amount of water, began normal breathing again. The subject was treated, transported back to the access area, and assessed by Paramedics from Maries-Osage Ambulance.
The subject was taken to an area Emergency Room where they are currently being treated.
Maries County Sheriff’s Office says they are beyond relieved that the subject is alive.
