AAA: Gas prices drop statewide as holiday travel peaks

MISSOURI (KBSI) — Gas prices across Missouri are ending the year lower as holiday travel continues, according to AAA.

The statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is $2.54, according to the AAA Missouri Weekend Gas Watch. That price is 5 cents lower than last week and 18 cents lower than the same time last year. Among major metropolitan areas in Missouri, St. Louis drivers are paying the highest average price at $2.69 per gallon, while Joplin drivers are paying the lowest at $2.25.

Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $2.90, down 4 cents from last week and 12 cents from a year ago, AAA reported.

AAA said Missouri motorists are seeing the lowest statewide average gas price since March 2021. Crude oil prices remain low, and gasoline supply has stayed strong despite increased demand during the holiday season. Overall, AAA said 2025 has been a relatively stable year for gas prices, with few fluctuations and no sharp spikes.

“Savings at the pump are in store for the 2.1 million Missouri travelers expected to drive to their holiday destinations,” AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria said. “Drivers are reminded to make sure their vehicles are road-trip-ready by checking battery health, tire pressure and tread, and fluid levels to minimize chances of a breakdown this holiday season.”

Gas prices were current as of press time based on market data posted at 3:41 a.m. Motorists can find updated prices along their routes using the free AAA mobile app, which also provides traffic information, travel planning tools, discounts and roadside assistance tracking.

AAA also encourages drivers to use its Approved Auto Repair program to find qualified auto repair shops.
