JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — Gas prices in Missouri have fallen to their lowest level in four years as millions prepare for holiday travel, according to AAA Missouri’s Weekend Gas Watch.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is $2.59, down five cents from last week and eight cents from this time last year. Among major metro areas surveyed, St. Louis posted the highest average at $2.69, while Joplin reported the lowest at $2.39 per gallon.

Nationally, the average price is $2.94, also down five cents from last week and eight cents from a year ago.

AAA says the seasonal decline comes at a welcome time for drivers heading into one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

“Missouri drivers have not seen the statewide gas price average this low since March 2021,” AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria said. “That will be welcome news for the 2.1 million Missourians expected to drive to their year-end holiday destinations.”
