MISSOURI (KBSI) – As some parts of the area are getting to see some snow flurries, now is a good time to plan ahead with vehicle maintenance.

According to AAA, in Missouri alone they responded to over one hundred thousand roadside assistance calls do to winter weather.

Nick Chabarria is the spokesperson for AAA and he says getting preventative maintenance done before winter weather hits is crucial, especially during colder temperatures.

Three areas they you can check up on this weekend are your tires, your battery, and your wiper blades.

Chabarria says to check your tire pressure. Tires can lose a pound of air for every 10 degrees drop in air temp which can cause traction problems on bad road conditions. Car batteries can lose up to a third of their power in freezing temperatures so making sure your battery is within its lifespan will prevent getting broke down, and if your wiper blades are old or making noise when you turn them on then you probably need new ones before going out in the cold rain or snow.

Chabarria one items you may want to keep in your vehicle in case of a break down,

Sand, salt some sort of abrasive materiel that you can put under your tires, if you do slide off in snow or ice, of course a snow shovel, ice scraper and snow brush that should be in your vehicle.

Keeping a coat and gloves on hand for everyone in your vehicle, a flashlight and fully charged phone are also good things to keep in your car.

Its important to remember if the road conditions are bad its always safer to just stay home if you can and if you download the now local news app, and you can share and view the latest weather and news updates.
