Adults continuing their education; taking the next step for their future
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Over 250 people have signed up for the Adult Education and Literacy Program, looking to finish what they started.
Laurie Gibbs is the Director for the Adult Education and Literacy Program. She says a lot has changed since Covid, before age 40+ was the average student, but now young adults are looking towards the program.
“Sometimes we get students that drop high school, that want to just go ahead and get that high school equivalency, and they’ll come to us straight from school.”
Gibbs says that many people over the age of forty still come to the program looking for the next step in their future, or maybe just to help loved ones, “Maybe it’s to get a job promotion, some want to go onto college and get that certificate, sometimes they just to help their kids or their grandkids with their schoolwork.”
Gibbs says the program helps with not only receiving a GED or HISET, but also with those looking to further their English-speaking skills.
The AEL program is completely free but a fee is required for the final exam.
Gibbs says, “They just need to be able to support themselves, they need a better paying job, but it also there’s something to be said about finishing what you start.”
