Ainaya Williams Earns OVC Freshman of the Week Honors
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — After an impressive week on the court, Southeast Missouri State freshman center Ainaya Williams has been named the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Freshman of the Week. Williams averaged 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2 steals per game, securing her first SEMO weekly honor.
“It means a lot to me,” Williams says. “I was lacking a little confidence for a while, but being named (OVC Freshman of the Week) brings it back. It’s a good feeling and a great way to start the new week.”
Williams credits her recent success to finding her rhythm and improving her focus on positioning and avoiding foul trouble. “When I’m in a good groove, it helps my team play better overall,” she says.
SEMO women’s basketball head coach Briley Palmer spoke highly of Williams for her determination and work ethic. “This honor is well-deserved. She’s been making adjustments and showed tremendous effort during a week where we needed her to play significant minutes,” Palmer says. “She’s growing as a player and working toward that perfect game by focusing on the small details like decision-making and execution.”
Williams and the Redhawks are eager to build on this accomplishments, as they prepare for the second half of the season. “We’re ready to compete and show everyone what we can do,” Williams says.
SEMO will face Lindenwood in Lindenwood, on Thursday.
