Ameren highlights energy assistance programs for Illinois customers in 2026

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Ameren is reminding customers that multiple energy-assistance resources remain available in 2026 for qualifying households struggling to pay utility bills.
While many customers are directed to apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Ameren is also highlighting Warm Neighbors Cool Friends, a program designed for customers whose income exceeds LIHEAP limits but who may still need help.
The program provides assistance through the Energy Assistance Foundation and is funded primarily through voluntary contributions from Ameren, its customers and coworkers. Ameren contributed $2 million to the program in December to support Illinois customers.
Warm Neighbors Cool Friends offers eligible households up to $500 in bill-payment assistance. Applicants must have made a matching payment within the past 45 days. Eligibility includes households with incomes between 200% and 300% of the federal poverty level or up to 80% of a county’s area median income.
“Warm Neighbors Cool Friends acts as a critical lifeline for hardworking families who may not qualify for federal assistance but are still struggling to keep their homes safe and comfortable,” said Susan Sams, executive director of the Energy Assistance Foundation. “We’re proud to partner with Ameren so customers have somewhere to turn when they need support the most.”
More information about Warm Neighbors Cool Friends, including how to apply or contribute, is available at warmneighborscoolfriends.org. Additional Ameren assistance and energy efficiency programs can be found at Ameren – Ameren.com.
