Ameren Illinois begins $1.5M gas pipeline upgrade in Herrin

HERRIN, Ill., (KBSI) — Ameren Illinois has launched a $1.5 million natural gas pipeline replacement project in Herrin, upgrading infrastructure that dates back to the 1960s.

Crews began work Aug. 4 to replace 2.75 miles of steel pipeline with corrosion-resistant polyethylene material. The project also includes upgrades to service lines for about 240 customers.

Construction spans east to west from 18th through 22nd streets and north to south from West Walnut to Stotlar Road. Work is expected to be completed in 2026, depending on weather conditions.

Ameren Illinois officials said the upgrades are being done during summer months to ensure the system is ready to meet demand during colder weather.

In compliance with state law, Ameren is coordinating with J.U.L.I.E. (8-1-1) to identify underground utilities before digging. Customers may see paint markings or colored flags near construction areas.
