Ameren Missouri offers support programs as the warm summer time continues
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — New electric rates went into effect on June 1, for Ameren Missouri, increasing the average residential bill by about 12%, or roughly $14 per month, according to Ameren Missouri.
The rate adjustment follows a request submitted to the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) last year to support electric system upgrades and cleaner energy generation.
“We understand that in the summer, bills are higher. And if you’re struggling to keep up, you are not alone,” said Page Selby, manager of customer advocacy at Ameren Missouri. “We have a lot of tools, and we’re here to help.”
Selby points out online tools that allow customers to monitor energy usage and understand where they’re spending the most, such as air conditioning or plugged-in appliances.
Ameren also wanted to help customers, encouraging them to use these simple steps to stay safe and reduce energy costs during extreme heat in the summer.
- -Use fans alongside air conditioning. Running ceiling or box fans allows you to raise your thermostat by 3 to 4 degrees without losing comfort.
- -Replace or clean filters regularly. A clean filter helps your system run more efficiently and use less energy.
- -Block direct sunlight. Closing blinds or curtains with white backings can reduce indoor heat by as much as one third.
- -Cook smart, use outdoor grills or small appliances like air fryers and slow cookers to keep indoor temperatures down.
- -Install a smart thermostat. Programmable thermostats can adjust temperatures when you’re away, saving households up to $180 annually.
- -Enroll in Budget Billing. This program evens out seasonal energy costs into predictable monthly payments.
- -Practice outdoor safety. Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade, and wear light-colored, breathable clothing.
- -Explore assistance programs. Income eligible customers may qualify for federal and state aid like LIHEAP or Missouri’s Summer ECIP program.
- -Access flexible billing options. Ameren offers payment agreements, due date extensions, and rebates, including $50 for joining the Peak Time Savings program.
Ameren also wants to inform viewers about several programs, including “Dollar More,” which offers up to $600 in bill assistance, and “Keeping Cool,” which provides a $50 monthly credit during the summer for eligible seniors, people with disabilities, and households with children under five, along with LIHEAP.
“If you get your bill and think you can’t afford it, just reach out early,” Selby said. “Many people don’t realize they qualify for help.”
