Ameren Missouri urges customers to call 811 before digging to prevent utility line damages

ST. LOUIS, Mo., (KBSI) – Ameren Missouri is urging customers to call 811 before digging to prevent utility line damages, following a statewide increase in reported incidents in 2024.

Safe Digging Practices

Call 811: Contact Missouri 811 at least three business days before starting a digging project to have utilities marked.
Wait for Marking: Allow professional locators to mark natural gas, electric, water, sewer, telephone, and cable lines with paint and flags.
Proceed with Caution: Avoid digging within the 24-inch tolerance zone of each utility mark and use appropriate tools and safe digging practices.

Importance of Calling 811

Prevent Accidents: Hitting a buried line can be expensive to repair, disrupt utility service, and cause serious injury or death.
Comply with the Law: Calling 811 is a free service and required by law to protect individuals and communities.

Consequences of Not Calling 811

Nationwide Leading Cause: Failure to call 811 is the leading cause of underground utility line incidents.
Risk of Damage: Lines can shift due to erosion and root growth, making it possible to hit a line even if you’ve dug in the same spot before.

What to Do in Case of a Utility Line Hit

Stop Activities: Immediately stop digging and move to a safe location.
Report Damage: Call 911, Ameren Missouri at 800-552-7583, and 811 to report the damage.
Do Not Attempt to Repair: Do not use anything that could generate a spark or attempt to repair, shut down, or backfill damaged lines.
